"Castles around the
Baltic Sea" Now only $23 !!

"The Baltic Sea smells of tar and hemp, is dark and sambre, with endless winters in which everything dies. Only the short, fragile summer gives a little life and light to those heavily forested parts of Europe" – these were days of the rise of the Baltic world, beginning with the Vikings 1000 years ago. Later the Teutonic Order, which started its expansion in the Prussia and the Baltic states in the early 13th century, showed its great interest in the area. They were the first who started bulding these monumental fortresses. In this book you can find the descriptions of 46 castles from such states as: SWEDEN (e.g. Kalmar, Malmo, Gripsholm castles), FINLAND (Turku, Kastelholm), RUSSIA (Ivanogorod, Sankt Petersburg), ESTONIA (Narva, Tallinn, Rakvere), LATVIA (Riga, Rundale), LITHUANIA (Vilnius, Trakai), POLAND (Malbork, Frombork, Olsztyn), GERMANY (Schwerin, Gustrow),DENMARK Aarhus, Kronborg, Frederiksborg). All these castles are described in details (ENGLISH language) and beautifully illustrated with coloured, very high quality photos, and the map with all of them marked so as to complete the whole. Poland, 1994, 160 pages, 7 x 9.5 in. |

Actually this translation is a kind of brief description of the book I would like to present here. It is a beautifully edited depiction of the way of living Polish 17c. noblemen used to lead. There is political and military real life as well as its backgounds and entourage shown – on hundreds of high quality coloured photos and pictures (which you find as outstanding indeed). A myth of ‘the Sarmatas’ who were for Polish gentry something like for the French ‘the Galls’, ‘the Scythians’ for the Hungarians, ‘the Goths’ for the Scandinavians. Here the author tries to show the birth of the Sarmatas myth and how it was developing through centuries. Military outfit , weapons, tools which accompanied the nobles in their everyday activities and place of living are all shown in every detail. 233mpages, hardcover, Polish language. The pictures of battles and events of important historic meaning – all this make this book not only an interesting one but also special. Not only for connoisseurs!! |
